LASG plans clampdown on illegal structures

The Lagos State Government has declared zero tolerance for illegal  structures without building permit in the state.

The Chairman, House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Nureni Akinsanya, on Thursday said the state planned to sanitise the building construction industry and would no longer tolerate illegal structures.

Akinsanya, who made this known at a stakeholders’ workshop on ‘Physical Planning Permit Regulations 2019’ and ‘Planning and Building Control Appeals Committee’, said the move was part of efforts to improve the ease of doing business in the state.

He said he declared total support for both the regulations and appeals committee because of their potential positive impact on the built environment in Lagos State.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, said the state planned to deliver better town planning services.
He said, “Gone is the era where developers build without a permit; we need a livable and sustainable environment.

“Ignorance will also not be tolerated as the state has declares zero tolerance for unapproved structures.”

Salako said the stakeholder engagement was the state government’s response to the yearning of the general public, as well as the professionals in the built environment for a better-organised building construction industry in the state.

He stated that the House of Assembly recently passed the 2019 Planning Permit Regulations into law and urged the general public to access it on the ministry’s website to be guided on the “do’s and don’ts” of physical planning and urban development in the state.
